Plant Care Guide

Some important Plant care information to help you give the best care to your new plant.

Our Plants

Our beautiful plants are all grown outside, in open greenhouses in far North Queensland. While all care is taken to select the best plants for our website, there still may be small blemishes and nibbles from time to time. This reflects the natural, open environment in which they are grown. All plants are thoroughly inspected and cleaned prior to shipping.

Mix/Soil

Our plants are mainly grown in a species appropriate mix. We use our own mix for Aroids, which is a chunky mix of orchid mix, coconut chunks, bark, chopped sphagnum moss, volcanic rock (sometimes). We also use premium potting mix where appropriate. Fertilisers in our greenhouses include chicken pellets, Seasol and Osmoscote.

We use temporary supports/totems to make it easier to remove plants for shipping. Please ensure you have a permanent totem ready to support your plant if you purchase multi-node Aroids. Some plants don’t require a totem in the long-term but may need some temporary support while they recover from their travels. Alocasia, mameii and some large aroids sometimes droop for a few days after shipping. A plastic ladder support, chop stick or bamboo stakes can work well to support the plant until they pick up their ‘head’.

Light

Most of our plants are shade lovers. No direct sun after 9am. They prefer bright filtered or dappled light. Be extra careful if strong sunlight hits the plants through a window or skylight in the middle of the day. This can often burn shade lovers. A little morning sun is fine. There are artificial lighting solutions available, please seek local advice re these.

Humidity

Our plants are used to living in a high humidity zone. These plants generally enjoy being in a group which can create a micro-climate. This, along with some misting can keep your plants humidity levels up. There are humidifier options, please get some local advice about these.
